Chickens are pets that can be hatched from fertilized chicken eggs, found in the world.

Taming

Chickens do not spawn in the outside world, and as such, they cannot be encountered. Instead, the expedition parties can find fertilized chicken eggs in certain locations. When a fertilized chicken egg is collected, it is placed in storage. If the player has a open chicken coop, they can deposit the egg inside the coop to incubate it. Once the egg finishes incubating, it hatches into a baby chicken.

Uses

Chickens, when grown into adulthood, have some distinct uses that make them good to have.

Eggs

Adult chickens will lay chicken eggs over time, 1 egg a day for each chicken. When chicken eggs are laid, a survivor can be sent out to collect the eggs. Once chicken eggs are collected, they can be made into three dishes: the Fried Egg, the Gammon Egg and Chips, and the Mushroom Omelette. These serve as great early to mid game food items, as they only require either poor stoves or camping stoves to cook.

It is unknown if chickens stored in a chicken coop can lay fertilized chicken eggs.

Fertilizer

Chickens, when stored inside a chicken coop, will passively produce fertilizer, which will then be stored in the coop. As with chicken eggs, survivors can be sent out to collect the generated fertilizer from the coop. Collected fertilizer can then be used to grow crops, or used as fuel.

It is unknown if having more chickens in a coop will increase fertilizer production rates.

Slaughtering

If you manage to run low on food, or if you have too many chickens which quickly consume food, you can slaughter a chicken for some meat. If you choose to slaughter a chicken or chickens, they will drop meat. Meat can then be used to craft prepared food, just like chicken eggs.

Feeding and Weight

It is important to feed your chickens to keep them in healthy condition. To feed chickens, simply add feed to a chicken coop. Chickens can be fed anything, even processed food items. If a chicken is fed too little, it will become underweight. It is best to feed underweight chickens, to keep their weight healthy and to prevent starvation. However, if a chicken is fed too much, it will become overweight.

Because of this, make sure to feed chickens fair amounts of food, while also monitoring their weight to help decide on how much food is best to give to your chickens.

Age

Age is a mechanic that determines how long a chicken has been alive. All chickens start as babies once hatched, but after ??? days, they will grow into adults. After ??? days, chickens will die of old age.
