Sheltered 2 has a few animals that serve different purposes. There are three types of animals, surface animals, which are those that appear on the surface of the shelter, and can be hunted with snare traps or deer stands, pets, which are those that can be tamed by expedition parties, and serve as companions, and aggressive animals, those which are occasionally encountered by expedition parties.

Pets, a third type of animal, were added on v1.2.11, the Pets and Pests update. Pets come in the form of three animals: Dogs, which are highly adaptable and can learn a wide range of skills, Cats, which are pets that can help to catch rats and "stalk the night," and Chickens, which passively produce Chicken Eggs and Fertilizer, when stored in a built Chicken Coop.

Types of Animals

Surface Animals

Surface animals will appear on the surface of your shelter, in the form of rabbits and deer. Rabbits can be hunted by having a character build a snare trap on the surface, which will then catch the rabbit when it walks into the trap. Deer can be hunted by having a character build a deer stand, and then interacting with it. When a character is in the deer stand, they will shoot down any deer spotted on the surface. Note that the deer stand also requires rifle ammo to use.

Caught rabbits or shot deer can be harvested for four resources: meat, leather, bones, and animal fat. Meat can be cooked into different foods for sustenance, while leather, bones and animal fat are used in certain crafting recipes.

The yield of harvested rabbits or deer can be increased by unlocking the "Animal Skinning" faction goal, which can be unlocked by harvesting 10 rabbits or deer. Harvesting more animals will increase the rank of this faction goal, thus allowing even more resources to be harvested per harvested animal!

Pets

Pets will occasionally appear in the outside world. Pets come in the form of three animals: cats, dogs chickens. Dogs and cats can both be encountered in the wild, while chickens can be hatched from fertilized chicken eggs, found in certain locations.

Dogs and Cats

When a dog or cat is encountered, the player is informed by the message "Expedition party has encountered a friendly animal." When the player assesses the encounter, either a dog or cat will appear. Then, a taming mini-game will start. The player has to perform certain actions to slowly gain the wild pet's trust. Once the player feels comfortable with the recruit chance, they can attempt to recruit the pet. If the recruit attempt fails or if stamina runs out, the animal will flee. Note that taming pets is extremely luck-based, so outcomes can vary.

Once a dog or cat is tamed, they will be taken to your shelter and will live with your other survivors. Dogs can learn a wide range of skills, in which other survivors can teach them those skills. Dogs can also be taken on expeditions, to assist with searching locations, carrying items, and combat. Cats have three different stats; Affection, Prey Drive, and Scavenging. These can be increased using cardboard boxes, mouse toys, and yarn baskets respectively. Cats will also kill any rats that wander into your shelter, which is helpful for preventing the plague.

The range a expedition party can encounter a dog or cat can be increased by crafting and equipping either a dog whistle for dogs, or a cat bell for cats.

Chickens

Chickens have a different taming method. To obtain a chicken, the player must find a fertilized chicken egg. Once one is found, the player must them build a chicken coop to incubate the egg. Note that eggs CANNOT be incubated inside the shelter; they must be incubated in a coop.

Once chickens have been hatched, they will start as a baby. Chickens can be given feed in the form of food, by adding food to a chicken coop. Constantly feeding chickens is required to maintain a healthy weight, but note that chickens can become overweight if too much feed is given to them. Once your chickens grow into adults, they can start laying chicken eggs and producing fertilizer. Adult chickens can also be slaughtered for meat.

Aggressive Animals

Aggressive animals will sometimes appear in the outside world. These animals appear in the form of two animals: the bear and the wolf. Bears and wolves will occasionally attack expedition parties, and will use certain special abilities such as "Howl" and "Bite".[1] As with surface animals, aggressive animals will drop meat, leather, bones, and animal fat when killed. Unlike traditional survivors, animals cannot be dazed or subdued in combat, making them harder to deal with. Because of this, aggressive animals cannot be captured using indoctrination cells and kept as pets. They will, however, run away if they feel outmatched.

If an expedition party is exploring in a forest or mountain biome, the chances of an animal encounter will increase. The chances of encountering a bear or wolf can be reduced by crafting animal repellent, crafted in a tier 3 workbench. Repellent requires 4 garlic, 2 animal fat, 1 ginger root, and 1 holy basil. Repellent reduces the chances of encountering wolves or bears by 90%, which can be very helpful when hunting on forest tiles or exploring in forests or mountains, considering how cheap it is to craft.
